about

Composed and arranged by Eugene Ball and Geoff Hughes.

Arthur Rimbaud introduces this prose poem as “pages from the diary of a damned soul”. Completed in 1873 when he was nineteen and his relationship with Paul Verlaine was over. It is the only work he published himself and has had a huge influence on worldwide culture, especially amongst the surrealists and artists, writers and musicians through the 20th century. It reads to me like a bizarre homeric tale of purposeful disorientation of the senses in an attempt to become a seer and the psychological and moral failure of the process. This was his last work.

This cd is the sequel to our previous cd “the drunken boat“, available on jazzhead and completes the cycle for the quintet and composers Eugene Ball and Geoff Hughes.

My life has been infinitely richer since discovering this truly precocious genius.
