about

Jazzhead takes great pleasure in announcing Cyclosporin, from one of Australia’s most awarded, prolific and respected jazz musicians, Allan Browne. In Cyclosporin, Allan is joined by the fabulous talents of Eugene Ball, Nick Haywood, Geoff Hughes and David Rex – this is the Allan Browne Quintet.

“Browne’s drumming skills underpin performances that dance with collaborative energy, wit and intelligence. Here is a revealing glimpse of a man who is musical to the very core of his soul.” KENNY WEIR (MELBOURNE HERALD SUN)

Allan has worked with over 35 international jazz icons including Milt Jackson, Jay McShann, Herb Ellis, Phil Woods, Al Cohn, Plas Johnson, Jimmy Witherspoon, Art Hodes, Barney Kessel, Urbie Green, Buddy Tate, Joe Newman, Wild Bill Davidson, Charlie Bird, Emily Remla and Richie Cole.

With a discography totaling over 70 LP’s and CDs, Allan’s latest, Cyclosporin, is set to delight all jazz enthusiasts and people who love to experience vibrant, passionate music. Allan’s past albums include the Paul Grabowsky Trio’s ‘Six by Three’ (1990, ARIA Best Jazz Album ) and ‘When Words Fail’ (1995, ARIA Best Jazz Album). The following five albums were short listed for ARIA Awards, New Orleans Rascal’s ‘Genre Jumpin Jazz’, his Quartet’s ‘BirdCalls’, Shelley Scown’s ‘Angel’, Browne Haywood Stevens’ ‘Sudden in a Shaft of Sunlight’ and Allan Browne’s New Rascal’s ‘East St. Kilda Toodleoo’.

Initially self-taught, Allan spent the 1960's establishing the Red Onion Jazz Band internationally. He led this group through three extended European tours in 1967, 1969 and 1994. From the mid 1970's to the mid 1990's, Allan worked extensively with Peter Gaudion, Geoff Kitchen, Ken Shroeder, Vince Jones, Barney McAll, Steve Grant and Paul Grabowsky's Trio and Quintet. Simultaneously he led the contemporary jazz group Onaje, which was selected to represent Australia at the prestigious Montreal Jazz Festival in 1992.

“Browne stands out because of two rare and inextricably linked gifts. The first is some kind of mysterious internal radar that locks into the dynamics going on around him giving him a Zelig-like ability to not only blend in and hold it all together but to draw exuberance from the material itself. The second is his openness, no mean feat in a world as fictionalised as jazz but consistent with an art form so capacious and vibrant.” LEON GETTLER (THE MELBOURNE AGE)

“An irresistible momentum, the music is full of feeling and glorious sounds” JOHN CLARE - SYDNEY MORNING HERALD

“Bound together by his lithe drumming insouciance and that unmistakable magnitude of heart.” JOHN SHAND - SYDNEY MORNING HERALD

Allan is also a published writer of various articles and poems. He is currently working on an anthology of poems and essays from the perspective of his forty year career as a jazz musician.
